“Take THAT” -SleepWalkas @ Hip Hop Evolution

Posted by goldchain On August - 31 - 2010

As we mentioned in the Final Outlaw post, Hip Hop Evolution was a fantastic event. Final Outlaw wrecked it with “Machine” then SleepWalkas came on and ripped it. This was my second time seeing this group perform. Each time they get on the mic they propel me to a whole ‘nother level of hype for hip hop.

Final Outlaw performs “Machine”

Posted by goldchain On August - 30 - 2010

A couple weeks ago, Encore Status made it to Hip Hop Evolution 3. It was definitely a great show. The love for Hip Hop at Soapstone gallery was so intense you could feel it.  Final Outlaw performed and crushed it. He performed a some “old” stuff and new song from his up coming project Unstoppable Love. In the video below he performs “Machine,” a song that will be on that album. He will be shooting a video for the song with Janelle Ryan in September. (P.S. they are still casting so if you are interested please hit her up).

More videos of the night are coming soon.

I DARE YOU TO RAISE THE RENT!

Posted by goldchain On August - 24 - 2010

Hey,
This video came out a while ago, but I was inspired to put this up after CNN money put out some alarming numbers. According to CNN, “Existing home sales sank 27.2% in July, twice as much as analysts expected.” Home sales were apparently at a peak in April because home buyers were rushing to take advantage of the 8,000 dollar tax incentive that would not be available at month end. Now thats its over, “sales are 34% below April’s tax incentive-induced peak.”

Sucks.

Most people must be renting now, I guess. The video below by Kyle Rapps ft KRS ONE is so fitting for people who are in the situation where they must rent. Times are HARD. The last thing we need is for Landlords to raise the rent.

Poll: Celebrities and their drug use

Posted by goldchain On August - 22 - 2010

Whitney Houston by tm_10001

I actually sat through most of the Temptations movie that aired on Vh1 (all 4 hrs of it). I know this movie came out a long time ago, but I was taking it easy this Sunday…so I said why not. It was very alarming how hard some of the members DnD’d (Drank and Drugged). For some it lead to death. For others it lead to missed opportunities in life.

One thing that struck me was seeing how one of the members of the Temptations ( notorious for being strung out on drugs), was always welcomed back without even a mention of the wrongs he did to the group because of his addiction. I immediately thought about Whitney Houston sadly. Every one is cheering for her even though she continues to wax and wane between soberness and hotmess-ness. Just when we think she’s got it under control…we see evidence that she’s lost it again. We’re still praying for you Whitney because we know recovery is a long road. I just wonder if she’ll ever regret what she let drugs do to her. My cousin thinks that she’ll do what most celebrities do – jot it down as “learning lesson” or “learning experience” when it should be a lot more than that…What do you think? The Kid Gashi

Every once in awhile you’ll find an artist whose talent is so raw yet rich, you have stop what you’re doing? You just have to sit there in awe, because what you’re hearing is something more than “potential”…you’re hearing destiny. When I heard The Kid Gashi‘s demo, I felt this very way. I didn’t know much about Gashi until after I interviewed him. By the end of the call, “The Kid” was able to convince me that this was more than just a phase, and his talent will evolve season to season. This Albanian-African born artist reppin’ Brooklyn will be a force to reckon with we guarantee it!…Listen to his tracks and our interview below. ‘No Shortcuts’ and ‘In My Life Time’ are off of his demo. He also has a single called No Coming Back featuring Nipsy Hussle (video is below player).

5 Reasons to ditch the label

Posted by goldchain On July - 21 - 2010

via likeZebra

1. Competition for Attention-
Music artists are already forced to compete for the attention and interest of fans; they shouldn’t have to compete for that attention within their own record label. Labels divvy up their focus between multiple signed artists. Whereas an artist may be giving 100% to developing their music career, a label can only allocate a fraction.

2. Quantity over Quality-
A record label’s main concern is the monetary return on their investment, but an artist’s main passion is the quality of the music being produced. Conflicting core values between labels and artists unnecessarily inhibit the creativity and uniqueness of the artists’ music.

3. Taxation without Representation-
Labels take a cut of the money earned by artists for performing tasks that the artists could actually do themselves with the right access to resources and guidance. Web sites such as likeZEBRA.com offer recording and promotional tools to get the music directly out to an audience without being an expensive middle man.

4. Out of Touch- Labels have a toxic fixation on record sales. This is an anomaly in today’s low record-selling music industry. With the easy access to cheap or free music online, labels are rapidly
losing their relevance for turning their focus more towards the importance of live performances. Even major bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails addressed their labels’ irrelevance by selling recent albums directly to fans online.

5. Trade-Offs of Contracts-

What does an artist really get in return for signing with a label? Lack of creative control? A portion of their
own paychecks? Restrictions and inflexible deadlines? Binding obligations to labels leave much to be desired when artists can now rely on themselves to get their music produced, promoted and purchased.
