Posted by Tricia Status On November - 29 - 2010

Our friend Steph Ldavoski just released another hit called “Killa in Da Club”. (Its not what you think) This track is definitely going to get ladies in the club jumpin’. Clap it up (but don’t spill your drink) when listening to this.

The KickDrums – CMJ 2010

Posted by Tricia Status On November - 10 - 2010

It took me a long time to pen this post because I really didnt know what to say about The KickDrums‘ music other than they completely wowed me at CMJ 2010. I do a lot of the video taping for Encore Status during these showcases. During one of the songs in The Kickdrums’ set, I had to hand the camera to my partner G40oz because I was completely lost in their music.
.
The foundation of this group from Ohio is singer/producer Alex Fitts and producer/dj Matt Penttila. This duo produces music across several Genres – Alternative Rock, Soul Music, Hip Hop. One project that shows their versatility is their collaboration with Joell Ortiz. I really feel ashamed that I don’t about them but I look forward to following them from now on. Below is the video of their performance of “Counting on You” at CMJ and the Joell Ortiz Collaboration on the song “How To Change”.

Final Outlaw: Can You Relate?

Posted by Tricia Status On November - 8 - 2010

We first saw him perform like two years ago at The Annex (NYC). Since that very first encounter we’ve been Final Outlaw fans. His tracks are rich with lyrics that make note of social issues, past experiences, and what he envisions of the future. Any artist can spit lines that have all of those qualities…but what separates Final Outlaw from the rest of them is that he’s passionate about relaying a message to us, his people. Rather than spitting lyrics to the audience, Final Outlaw seems to be pleading with us, teaching us, hoping we’ll wake up. Download the ‘Can You Relate‘ Mixtape below. Its a warm up to his upcoming album ‘Unstoppable Love‘. The mixtape offers a snippet the track “Machine,” be we taped him performing it in full in August for the first time. Peep it here.

Artist Spotlight: Gloria Adams

Posted by Tricia Status On November - 5 - 2010

For the Want of a Horse the Rider was Lost

You never know where you can meet DOPE artists. A couple of weeks ago, I was at the baby shower of my unborn Godson (he’ll be a rapper/emcee/b-boy/actor despite what his mother thinks). In attendance was Gloria Adams. Gloria Adams is a super talented painter who was born in Pennsylvania. Her paintings contain various animal imagery and was done with impeccable detail. Her childhood experiences had a tremendous influence on her work. Those experiences included: hunting, riffle associations, Christianity, and factory work. Now living in NYC, her experiences here also provide some urban flare as well.

According to Adams:

The animal imagery in my work is carefully arranged based on the personal and universal meaning that the animal embodies. The paintings refer to my experience of living between two cultures, to personal narratives and to global current events, such as the most recent war in Iraq and environmental crisis. I construct the paintings in oil on smoothly primed canvas, considering in detail the significance and character of every object. The finished works call to mind magic and create an emotional experience that is beyond the fundamental core of the objects depicted.

Check out her stuff. If you would like to contact her, email us through the “Contact Us” form.

Versis at CMJ 2010

Posted by G40 On November - 4 - 2010

Versis

Encore Status witnessed many performers at Southpaw for the 2010 CMJ, but there was one performer that stood out to me. His lyrics and flow had the spirit of the 90’s West Coast era but at the same time maintained relevance to the present. This artist goes by the name of Versis. There is no doubt that lyrically, he can be compared to today’s mainstream artists- such as Nas, Snoop Dogg, Lupe Fiasco. His performance at the CMJ shows is a testament of his skill as a polished artist. The video below is his performance of “Thesis”, “iLLCANDESCENT”, and “The Journey”.

Mixtape: The Primary

Posted by Tricia Status On November - 2 - 2010

Just in time for the election season, Brooklyn Collectiv drops a tremendous project called “The Primary.” The mixtape features emcee/producer/lyrcist/visionary Sag Black. We interviewed Sag Black earlier this year about his track “Medicine,” a track dedicated to his mom who is HIV positive. Not to steal from Obama, but this mixtape is a “change” from what you’re used to. To steal a line from the track “Living On the edge,” Sag makes ‘these other rappers [seem like] terrorists.’ This is definitely a must listen. Check it out.
