How to Be a B-Boy (in less than 90 seconds)

Posted by Tricia Status On September - 27 - 2010

Breaking or B-boying, which is one of the pillars of hip hop outlined by Afrika Bambaataa, started in the 70s. I’ve gone to a few break dancing events and I am completely amazed at how gifted (and fearless) these dancers are. In my dreams, I’m just as gifted in the art. In reality…I’d probably break my face. I know I’m not the only one in quest of becoming a real life b-boy (or b-girl). Here’s a video done by a HowCast director. They are poking fun about how easy it is to make the transformation from being a regular person to a b-boy…

I can only wish lol

Ave Of Amerikkka

LYFETYME

About 2 weeks ago, @Encore_G40oz and I were chillin/arguing/brainstorming/working on things for the site and he threw on Lyfetyme’s Ave of Amerikkka mixtape track “Imitate Me.” Good music always cools hot heads and tempers at Encore Status headquarters.

“I’m a Brooklyn Ni@@a so I stay Sucka free…”

Its a simple line, but rings true to us BK folks. I would refrain from playing this track while driving on the Belt Parkway…the situation can result in the following:
A) Cutting off cars driving at the speed limit (Cuz the track made you too hype)
B) Getting a ticket for speeding (Cuz the track made you too hype)
No joke.
Take a listen:

New Balance Marsh custom

Posted by Tricia Status On September - 21 - 2010

Australian custom sneaker designer has done it again. We are always be impressed by his work. His creativity with color and an attention to detail on every sneaker he touches is impeccable. This particular piece caught our eye.

SekureD mastered the Dunk highs and lows and decided to tackle a New Balance 1400. Says SekureD about this adventure:

A brand new custom and my first for a very long time on a NB. This was a refreshing change and I can’t say enough about the quality of the materials on this model, they were superb.

Superb indeed…
Go to his site, order these right away. Before I do.

C. Clear freestyles at Five Spot

Posted by Tricia Status On September - 18 - 2010

Encore Status went out a few weeks ago to The Five Spot Lounge located in Brooklyn NY. We went to see a comedy show and got pleasantly surprised by C Clear. She was sent up to warm up the crowd before the comedians took the stage. I had never heard of her before but boy is she extremely talented. Here is footage of her freestyling and dropping a few verses from her album.

Two headed Teddy

Posted by Tricia Status On September - 12 - 2010

So as some of you might know, I have a couple of God Kids coming. While reading through some posts on HighSnobette.com I found another perfect gift. This Two headed Teddy would be so…great (I think). With the baby shower fastly approaching I was very worried that I wouldn’t be able to find a gift. I’m so relieved! I can’t wait to order!

Women, Can we call ourselves the B word?

Posted by Tricia Status On September - 10 - 2010

Nicki Minaj

Hey,
This is a question that just popped into my head while listening to “Up All Night” from Drake’s Thank Me Later. Nicki Minaj is featured on the track and in her verses more than once refers to herself with the “B” word.

Which bitch you know made a million of a mixtape?

Ok, so Nicki does have a track entitled “The Baddest B!tch” …and I guess Trina was the “Baddest B!tch” before Nicki got out of high school. There are a few other songs I can mention as well. I’ll admit that I’m pretty immune to the N-word in rap songs, but the way “b!tch” was delivered in Nicki’s lyrics evoked sharp emotions that felt like daggers. Is it because there are not that many female rappers in the first place? Is it the feminist in me (that I didn’t think I had in the first place)? Is it just …wrong?

Let me know. CLICK HERE TO COMMENT

Bad Artists just hustle harder…

Posted by Tricia Status On September - 9 - 2010

In talking to friend of mind who happens to manage indie artists, he came up with a conclusion that is rather sweeping but only applies to his particular interactions with SOME great artists who aren’t getting the fan traction he thinks they deserve. The statement that was made was “Bad Artists just hustle harder…”

Obviously there are other reasons why great artists don’t expand their fan base (and we’d love your comments addressing these issues), but complacency was a consistent behavior across the board in his experience. The artists are GREAT and they know it, but their behavior mimics those who already have deals. Team/Group Hustle and making a collective effort with their managers isn’t even a thought for them. This ultimately leads to tention, and unfortunately a broken relationship with each party going their separate ways.

A car with no gas cannot drive, but throwing it in neutral and pushing can give it momentum.

The end thought of our conversation was that in the beginning everyone should be on neutral. Everyone needs to work together to get shows and network to get connections. Artists need to help managers get their car-eers rolling. “Bad” artists and their managers have this concept down. The good artists should take heed.

What do you think?
