I got a chance to chat with Courtney of Doloris Petunia the amazing LA based accessories company that creates one of a kind pieces for retail. Here is what she had to say and what she wants you to know about Doloris Petunia.
I notice that you call all of your necklaces “statement necklaces,” what statement do you want your jewelry to make?
I have always felt that fashion is a way to express ones personality and individuality- I think my designs come out of my own sense of fashion- which is about what makes me feel good in that moment. I was a former competitive figure skater and used to make my costumes- I think a part of that has carried into my perception of fashion now and as a result I like to create things that stand out- or make a statement. All that being said- it is of upmost importance to me that any statement I make- or any of my designs create a possitive buzz. I always strive to push the envelope while maintaing a lady like harmony my grandmothers generation would appreciate.
Tell me about how you go about selecting the materials you use for your pieces, I know that you do alot of custom work but is there a process that goes in to the selection for your independent pieces?

I just moved to LA from NYC where I lived for 13 years- the most inspirational thing to me in NYC was the daily commute on the subway. Seeing such a wide varity of people and what they choose to wear each day..I would study each person and what they were wearing- asking myself..is that purely functional- why that cut or color- what is she trying to say about who she is by what she is wearing? My goal with Doloris Petunias is to have a line of designs that instantly gives the wearer that feeling (of specialness) knowing that with my pieces on they stand out a little more- stand a little taller- show the world who they are and feel good about that. The question- how do I select pieces is hard for me to answer- I don’t put a lot of thought into it- instead I allow my gut to inherently guide me as to what I “feel” is the most harmonious and attractive. Sometimes it’s easy- sometimes it’s very very hard.
What inspires your jewelry and your creativity in general?
Creativity for me is a very necessary part of my life- it sustains me and gets me up in the morning. I think there are a million ways to express ones creativity..For me, it is important to surround myself with as much …
