What inspires your jewelry and your creativity in general?
Creativity for me is a very necessary part of my life- it sustains me and gets me up in the morning. I think there are a million ways to express ones creativity..For me, it is important to surround myself with as much harmony and beauty as possible..whether that means reading a wide variety of books, magazines- seeing all sorts of films- plays- traveling around the block & around the world- just absorbing as much visual information as you can- and then- I feel like what I am here to do is to process that information and create a hybrid of my experiences to share with my customers. I think the most important way to be creative (or smart and interesting) is to have a solid sense of history as it relates to fashion, politics or the world in general..I think that I am able to do that well because I have a strong art history back ground- as well as a general interest in what’s happened in the world before my generation got here and what direction we’re headed in.
Besides the jewelry and the hair pieces do you make anything else?
I make just about everything- I really enjoy accessories not just for oneself- but also for their home and everything that makes up ones “environment”.
What are your goals for your line?
Ideally I would like to have a (full) lifestyle brand that would be a go to brand for classic, one of a kind..pieces.
Last Words?
Thank you for your interest in Doloris Petunia! Please contact me for any custom work as well as designs I have in stock- and always wear with love!

I got a chance to chat with Courtney of Doloris Petunia the amazing LA based accessories company that creates one of a kind pieces for retail. Here is what she had to say and what she wants you to know about Doloris Petunia.
I notice that you call all of your necklaces “statement necklaces,” what statement do you want your jewelry to make?
I have always felt that fashion is a way to express ones personality and individuality- I think my designs come out of my own sense of fashion- which is about what makes me feel good in that moment. I was a former competitive figure skater and used to make my costumes- I think a part of that has carried into my perception of fashion now and as a result I like to create things that stand out- or make a statement. All that being said- it is of upmost importance to me that any statement I make- or any of my designs create a possitive buzz. I always strive to push the envelope while maintaing a lady like harmony my grandmothers generation would appreciate.
Tell me about how you go about selecting the materials you use for your pieces, I know that you do alot of custom work but is there a process that goes in to the selection for your independent pieces?
Sometimes I will see a painting or flower or really well decorated living space that will have some color or shape or theme that will then lead me to some specific idea. When that is the case I relentlessly seek out the objects I am picturing in my head- most of the time finding those things is a combination of deconstructing (existing) items as well as allowing my eyes to view things in an unconventional way. What I am finding is the most important thing for me as an artist is to be surrounded by as much visual stimulation as possible. I just moved to LA from NYC where I lived for 13 years- the most inspirational thing to me in NYC was the daily commute on the subway. Seeing such a wide varity of people and what they choose to wear each day..I would study each person and what they were wearing- asking myself..is that purely functional- why that cut or color- what is she trying to say about who she is by what she is wearing? My goal with Doloris Petunias is to have a line of designs that instantly gives the wearer that feeling (of specialness) knowing that with my pieces on they stand out a little more- stand a little taller- show the world who they are and feel good about that. The question- how do I select pieces is hard for me to answer- I don’t put a lot of thought into it- instead I allow my gut to inherently guide me as to what I “feel” is the most harmonious and attractive. Sometimes it’s easy- sometimes it’s very very hard.

One theory is that the blocks themselves mold the sounds of each borough, like concrete diction. If that’s true, then, Sara Kana would speak somewhere between Moshulu and Vancortlandt quite fluently. The Bronx native pulls no punches and aims to back up her claim that, “She doesn’t spit too hard, you spit to soft” by flippin her game back and forth between punched out lines, and fluid lyrical flourish. In “BBoy Stance” she gives you the grand entry that is second nature to New York, and carries the energy with that “brrrrrrrhhattt” cadence, that BX signature shit we’ve come to know and love. I for one, always want to hear a rapper who can keep my attention by knowing when to shift back and forth, when to give me that pop, and when to draw it out. Big Pun. NICE. Why? Cause he could give you a hook or blow haze for minutes on end. Kana’s ability to be a rapper and a sophisticated lyricist, with growth, could be a cornerstone in re-establishing N.Y.’s place in hip-hop. Truth be told the homegirl just spits bricks, ev-er-y bar. She’s a breath of fresh chronic and no-label hoodies, in an atmosphere of studded belts, tight jeans, and aviators. The production can be a little gritty sometimes but the beats…the beats are as hard as Kana raps.
And she’s real. In a world where being different, or thought to be so, can kill a career, or a person, the openly lesbian rapper doesn’t shy from sex in her lyrics making it plain that “you couldn’t do it like me” in her track “Tasty Revenge”( pun intended to be sure) . Nowadays everybody stacks bricks, and chips, and whatnot, and shot somebody or held down some block, in a video having nothing to do with their real life. Sara Kana (much like the badass bitch from the Terminator) tells her truth, and has no problem smashing everything in her way. Is the track more than the kicking in of closet doors? Perhaps a metaphor for the unkind grasp men have had on the industry? That we’re all ready to move on to something different? Whatever you feel, she’s fucking the game up a lot better than most dudes out there.
